We all know the ditty, “April Showers Bring May Flowers,” yet do we really understand the significance of these words, especially the verb, “bring?” I think “bring” connotates that a gift is on its way! As to gardening, the gift of Spring follows the toil of Fall: feeding the dirt, making soil, putting a garden to bed for a long winter’s nap, and tucking it in with layers of leaves.

What do I get? I receive the treasured gift of self-seeding flowers, re-emerging herbs, and multiplying perennials.

One of my favorite pleasures of Spring is an endless supply of material for flower arranging. In the arrangement pictured here, I followed the principle of “filler, spiller, and thriller.”

1. Filler – Snap Dragons planted in the Fall come into their glory in early spring.

2. Spiller – For greenery, I used ever-abundant mint that was encroaching into other beds and I had to pull it up anyway! Mint also permeates bursts of continuous air-freshener  throughout my home.

3. Thriller – Self-seeding larkspur shows off in April and lasts through May.

4. Match your Setting to your Arrangement –  Made by my husband’s maternal grandmother, this table runner, embroidered with spring blossoms and edged by a crocheted border, emotes nostalgic scents of a hospitality legacy passed down.

In my opinion, home arranged flowers are so much more meaningful than store-bought ones. Not only can you tailor their colors and shapes to specific occasions and people, but you can also arrange them according to their aromas. Tickle all your senses and gift a personalized flower arrangement today.

Which blooms have April showers brought you?

But, to be fair, mint spells promise

And newness in the backyard of our life

As if something callow yet tenacious

Sauntered in green alleys and grew life.
