I have proof positive that gardeners are observant, empathetic, and generous!
This week, so many concerns and frets have been racing around in my head like bumper cars crashing into each other. I’ve been pre-occupied and unable to ground myself unless playing in the dirt. Plus, we’ve had gorgeous spring days in which I can hear the sprouting perennials and self-seeding flowers buried in the over-wintered, composted soil speak to me!
I had to answer their call, so I went to Home Depot to re-supply my backporch pots with mosquito repellant plants like lemon geranium (citronella), lavendar, and basil. In my eagerness to get into the Garden Center, browse, and smell all the new arrivals, I inadvertently left my keys in the car. Fortunately, I hadn’t bothered changing out of my gardening clothes, so my phone was nestled in one of the deep pockets of my gardening vest.
I called pop-a-lock and they answered right away. “Ma’am, we’ll be there in 15 minutes. We’re on Baylor campus just down the road.”
After pacing around the parking lot talking on the phone, I planted myself on a huge stack of mulch bags. I guess my frantic, anxious movements had been observed, because an overall-clad grandpa pushing his loaded cart of assorted vegetable plants stopped next to me and asked if I needed help. He even offered to wait with me for the locksmith! Next, a young mom retrieving her climbing toddler from the neatly stacked pile of mulch bags asked if I was alright. And while finally paying for my three purchases, another young gardener asked me if I needed a ride. My gray hair and floppy gardening hat must have made me look even more pitiful than normal! The concerned queries and generous offers kept coming one right after the other till the locksmith arrived.
I participated in many kind and generous. conversations within what could have been quite an ordeal. Because of observant gardeners, I found my mind and heart at ease. I also sensed peace and tranquility hugging me.
Thank you Central Texas Gardeners!
Do you take time out of your “business” to offer help?
And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds.
