In July, everyone seems to be going on vacation at once. Swings on the school playground stir haphazardly in the wind minus children’s limbs pumping like a metranone. Church is half-full lead by half-time substitute ministers. Pets are fed and watered by random care-givers, while waiting for their tribe to return. Scooters and bikes lean idly against silent garage doors on our cul-de-sac.

My languid soul begs, please don’t make me go to a “fake” destination or a dare-devil-dizzying-ride, both attractions at noisy, sweaty, expensive, mechanical, imitation theme parks. I am a finely seasoned grandma tired of the clamor of cities and counterfeit entertainment.

Give me a trip to natural beauty. Enough with the cities! I’m going to nature to find peace. Nature is so beautiful, it blows my mind and all the cobwebs of life tangled in it. You can lose yourself in nature or find yourself at the same time.

Give me sisters with whom I don’t have to explain anything. Give me a soothing sunset while humming a dreamland lullaby to my grandchildren who’ve long ago outgrown my bedtime songs. Give me my true-love’s hand, guiding my steps on the seashore. Give me my grandchildren’s enlightening conversations sitting on the back porch swing or visiting by facetime from far, far away.

Sounds like I need to go on vacation this summer as well!

Bon voyage my dear friends!

What is your ideal vacation?

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 11:28-29
